How to choose your fence height and style

Privacy, safety or curb appeal? Five questions that lead you to the right choice.

1. What is the fence for?

  • Privacy: nobody should see into the yard. Choose Privacy (solid).
  • Light and air: a solid lower part with an open top. Choose semi-privacy.
  • A pretty front yard: the classic American picket.
  • Large plots or animals: a post & rail fence with 2–4 rails.

2. How tall?

Height Typical use
0.9–1.2 m front yard, garden, flower beds
1.5 m terrace, pool, zoning the yard
1.8 m full privacy, boundary with a neighbor

1.8 meters (6 feet) is the American standard: a person of average height can't see over it.

3. Which color?

White is the classic and stays cooler in the sun. Tan, grey and khaki show dust and marks less, which matters by a road or in a dusty yard.

4. Gates

Plan ahead where the walk gate (1.22 m) and the driveway gate (3.05 m) will go. They match the fence color and style, so everything reads as one system.

5. Slope and ground

On a sloped plot the fence is installed in steps. On concrete or asphalt the posts are fixed with special brackets. We assess all of this on site when we measure.

Tip: before building on the boundary, agree it with your neighbor. If you're unsure about the rules, check with your municipality.
