What the lab tests mean: −30°C, 69°C and 1,000 hours of sun
SGS tested our fence material to American ASTM standards. Here's what each test checks and what the results mean.
The international lab SGS tested a PVC fence sample (6078 T&G) supplied by the factory. The report is dated 18 December 2023. Here are all four tests in plain words.
−30°C: impact in the cold (ASTM D4226)
The sample was frozen at −30°C for 24 hours and immediately tested with a falling 3.6 kg weight. The test shows how the material behaves in hard frost when something falls on or hits it. For our winters, those are tough conditions.
69°C: heat under load (ASTM D648)
The sample was loaded at 1.82 MPa and heated until it bent by a set amount. That happened at 69°C. Our summer air temperatures are far lower, and a white surface heats up less in the sun than a dark one.
1,000 hours of UV (ASTM G154)
The sample spent 1,000 hours under ultraviolet light in a test chamber. Each cycle was 8 hours of UV at 60°C followed by 4 hours of condensation, simulating sun and dew. Result: no visual change, with a color difference of ΔE 0.7. A ΔE below 1 is generally invisible to the human eye.
57.2 MPa: flexural strength (ASTM D790)
This test measures how much load the material takes when bent. For a fence, that means resistance to wind and accidental knocks.
