Caring for a vinyl fence: 6 simple tips
Vinyl never needs paint, but a little attention keeps it looking new for years.
1. Wash it once or twice a year
A hose, a soft sponge and soapy water are all you need. Wash from top to bottom and finish with a clean rinse.
2. Green film on the shady side
Where the sun rarely reaches, green film or mildew can appear. Use a mild vinegar solution or a cleaner made for vinyl.
3. Marks and scuffs
A melamine sponge removes trimmer, shoe and marker marks well. Work gently and don't scrub large areas.
4. What not to use
- Abrasive powders and wire brushes will scratch the surface.
- Solvents (acetone, paint thinner) damage the surface.
- A pressure washer is fine, but on low pressure and from a distance.
5. Plants and sprinklers
Don't train climbing plants onto the fence. Aim sprinklers so they don't keep the fence wet: iron-rich water leaves rusty stains.
6. Seasonal check
In spring and autumn, check the gate hinges and latch, the post caps and the places where the fence meets the ground. In winter, don't bang the fence with a snow shovel.
This takes no more than an hour a year, and the fence stays like new.
